Storms and Flooding Around the World

Heavy rains, typhoons, and hurricanes have led to serious flooding in places around the world. Deadly flooding has forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes across affected countries in central Africa, central Europe, and Asia.

Central and Western Africa

Heavy rains have caused floods across several countries in Africa, including Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Mali. The floods have killed over 1,000 people, destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, and forced nearly a million people to leave their homes.

Rains from a storm last week led to flooding in many areas of Nigeria. In Maiduguri, the water rose quickly after a dam broke. Roughly 40% of the city is underwater.

The recent flooding follows other serious floods, which hit the region earlier this year. Mali hasn’t had flooding this bad since the 1960s.

Across the region, the floods have destroyed houses, roads, and farms, leaving many families without food or a place to live. Governments and aid groups are trying to help, but it’s hard to reach all the affected areas. The United Nations warns that more flooding is likely in the coming months.

Central and Eastern Europe

Heavy rain and flooding following Storm Boris have caused serious problems in several countries in central and eastern Europe. At least 16 people have died, and more are missing. The most affected countries are the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Hungary, and Romania.

The flooding has forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes. Rivers have overflowed, streets are underwater, and some neighborhoods are completely flooded. In some places, dams have broken, and many homes don’t have electricity or drinking water.

Governments are working hard to help people affected by the floods. They are getting people out of dangerous areas, and sending thousands of rescue workers to help.

Experts say that rivers may continue to rise for several days. This means the flooding could get worse before it gets better. Cities like Budapest in Hungary and Bratislava in Slovakia are preparing for more flooding.

Asia

Typhoon Yagi, which hit Asia last week, has caused severe damage and loss of life across the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.

The storm was a powerful one, with winds up to 145 mph (234 kph). It caused flash floods, landslides, power outages, and forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes.

Vietnam and Myanmar were hit the worst. At least 233 people have died in Vietnam, with over 130,000 forced from their homes. Several hundred people have died in Myanmar, where roughly 320,000 people had to leave their homes.

Yagi has affected millions of people across different countries, destroying homes, farms, roads, and important buildings. Many areas are still struggling with flooding, making it hard for rescue teams.

Yesterday, Shanghai, China was hit by another storm, Typhoon Bebinca. Bebinca is the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai since 1949.

What About the Climate?

It’s too early to say what part the climate crisis  has played in these storms. But scientists have been warning for years that a warming world would lead to more storms, and more serious storms. Climate experts say the recent storms are worrying, but not surprising.

Did You Know…?
There has been flooding in North America, too. Hurricane Francine recently hit parts of Mexico and the United States, flooding areas in its path. On Monday, coastal areas in North Carolina and South Carolina faced intense rains and flooding from a storm coming in off of the Atlantic Ocean.
