Cuba is facing a serious power problem. On Friday, the entire island lost electricity. As of Monday, much of the island was still without power. The blackout shows how much work is needed to improve Cuba’s electricity system. Making things worse, parts of the island were hit by a hurricane on Sunday.
Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean. Like many countries, Cuba uses a national power grid to provide electricity. But Cuba’s power grid is in bad shape. The country has eight large power plants. They were all built about 50 years ago and have been wearing out. Cuba’s government hasn’t been able to keep up with the repairs.
As a result, Cuba often has “rolling blackouts”, with different areas having their power cut off for several hours a day. But on Friday, the entire country lost power, and for far longer than normal.

The blackout is making life difficult in Cuba. Without electricity, people can’t charge their phones or keep their food safe to eat. In some areas, no electricity also means no running water.
After the electricity went out, Cuba’s government announced that it had gotten power working again in some areas. But on Saturday, the entire grid went down again. Though the grid has been restarted several times, it has failed again – either completely or partly – four times. The government says it’s working hard to get power back, but it’s not clear when the electricity will be fully restored.
The blackout is a strong sign that Cuba needs to make some serious changes in the way it handles electricity. The problem goes beyond the old power plants. Energy experts say Cuba’s entire power system needs to be updated.
Cuba uses oil to create most of its electricity. But Cuba doesn’t produce enough oil to power its plants. About two-thirds of its oil has to come from outside the country. In the past, Cuba got oil from Russia, Venezuela, and Mexico. But now these countries are sending far less oil. That has left Cuba with a serious oil shortage.
For a while, Cuba used diesel generators to create electricity. But diesel fuel has gotten extremely expensive. Recently, the country has been renting huge ships which can create electricity. These ships can provide about 20% of Cuba’s electricity, but only if Cuba can supply the oil the ships need.

Cuba’s government doesn’t have much money, so it hasn’t been able to afford to fix its power problems. The island nation has been struggling more and more in recent years. The country depends on tourists for money, and the Covid-19 pandemic hit tourist businesses hard.
In 2021, thousands of people in Cuba protested against the government, complaining about shortages of food and electricity. Some people believe the current situation could lead to more protests.
Cuba’s problems have led many people to leave the country. Over the last three years, about 1 million people have left Cuba. Some experts say the blackout could lead to even more people leaving.

A small, but powerful storm called Hurricane Oscar hit the eastern part of Cuba on Sunday night. Though some homes were damaged, the biggest problems were caused by the storm’s heavy rains. The hurricane has also made it more difficult for the country to recover from the power outage.
